Harish-Chandra's formula for spherical functions

Builds on Semisimple Lie groupMaximal compact subgroupIwasawa decomposition of a Lie groupHaar measureSpherical functionGelfand pair

Statement

Let GG be a connected noncompact semisimple Lie group with finite centre and let KK be a maximal compact subgroup. Let G=KANG = K A N be an Iwasawa decomposition, let 𝔞\mathfrak a be the Lie algebra of AA, and for g∈Gg \in G let H(g)∈𝔞H(g) \in \mathfrak a be defined by g∈Kexp⁡(H(g))Ng \in K \exp(H(g)) N. Let ρ∈𝔞∗\rho \in \mathfrak a^* be half the sum of the positive restricted roots, counted with multiplicity. Let WW be the Weyl group of the restricted roots, acting on the complex dual 𝔞ℂ∗\mathfrak a^*_\C. Let dkdk be the Haar measure of KK of total mass 11. For λ∈𝔞ℂ∗\lambda \in \mathfrak a^*_\C define φλ(g)=∫Ke(iλ−ρ)(H(gk)) dk,g∈G.\varphi_\lambda(g) = \int_K e^{(i \lambda - \rho)(H(g k))} \, dk, \qquad g \in G.

  1. Each φλ\varphi_\lambda is a spherical function for the Gelfand pair (G,K)(G, K).
  2. Every spherical function for (G,K)(G, K) is equal to φλ\varphi_\lambda for some λ∈𝔞ℂ∗\lambda \in \mathfrak a^*_\C.
  3. φλ=φμ\varphi_\lambda = \varphi_\mu if and only if μ=wλ\mu = w \lambda for some w∈Ww \in W.

Remarks

The function g↦e(iλ−ρ)(H(g))g \mapsto e^{(i \lambda - \rho)(H(g))} is left KK-invariant and transforms by a character under right translation by ANA N. Averaging its right translates over KK gives a bi-KK-invariant function, and the functional equation ∫Kφ(xky) dk=φ(x)φ(y)\int_K \varphi(x k y) \, dk = \varphi(x) \varphi(y) is checked with the Iwasawa decomposition. For the converse one shows that spherical functions are joint eigenfunctions of the invariant differential operators on G/KG / K, and Harish-Chandra's homomorphism identifies the possible eigenvalues with WW-orbits in 𝔞ℂ∗\mathfrak a^*_\C.

Examples: φ−iρ=1\varphi_{-i\rho} = 1, since then iλ−ρ=0i \lambda - \rho = 0. The function Ξ=φ0\Xi = \varphi_0 is Harish-Chandra's Ξ\Xi-function, used to define Harish-Chandra's Schwartz space. The bounded spherical functions are the φλ\varphi_\lambda with Im⁡λ\operatorname{Im} \lambda in the convex hull of WρW \rho, and the positive definite ones include all φλ\varphi_\lambda with λ∈𝔞∗\lambda \in \mathfrak a^* real.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula is the starting point of the spherical transform f^(λ)=∫Gf(g)φ−λ(g) dg\hat f(\lambda) = \int_G f(g) \varphi_{-\lambda}(g) \, dg on G/KG / K. The asymptotic behaviour of φλ\varphi_\lambda at infinity is governed by the Harish-Chandra c-function. For G=SL(2,ℝ)G = \mathrm{SL}(2, \R) the functions φλ\varphi_\lambda are Legendre functions of cosh⁡\cosh of the hyperbolic distance.
