Potential theory Harmonic functions Theorem

Harnack's inequality

Builds on Harmonic functionPoisson kernel

Statement

Let a∈ℂa \in \C, let R>0R > 0, and let uu be a harmonic function on the disc {z∈ℂ:∣z−a∣<R}\set{z \in \C : \abs{z - a} < R} with u≥0u \ge 0. Then for every zz with r=∣z−a∣<Rr = \abs{z - a} < R, R−rR+r u(a)≤u(z)≤R+rR−r u(a).\frac{R - r}{R + r}\, u(a) \le u(z) \le \frac{R + r}{R - r}\, u(a).

Remarks

For ρ\rho with r<ρ<Rr < \rho < R, the Poisson formula on the disc of radius ρ\rho gives u(z)u(z) as an average of uu on the circle ∣w−a∣=ρ\abs{w - a} = \rho against the Poisson kernel (ρ2−r2)/∣w−z∣2(\rho^2 - r^2)/\abs{w - z}^2. Since ρ−r≤∣w−z∣≤ρ+r\rho - r \le \abs{w - z} \le \rho + r, this kernel lies between (ρ−r)/(ρ+r)(\rho - r)/(\rho + r) and (ρ+r)/(ρ−r)(\rho + r)/(\rho - r), and the average of uu over the circle is u(a)u(a). Letting ρ→R\rho \to R gives the inequality. The hypothesis u≥0u \ge 0 is necessary: u(z)=Re⁡zu(z) = \operatorname{Re} z on the unit disc has u(0)=0u(0) = 0 but takes nonzero values. In ℝn\R^n with n≥2n \ge 2, the same argument gives Rn−2(R−r)(R+r)n−1 u(a)≤u(x)≤Rn−2(R+r)(R−r)n−1 u(a)\dfrac{R^{n-2}(R - r)}{(R + r)^{n-1}}\, u(a) \le u(x) \le \dfrac{R^{n-2}(R + r)}{(R - r)^{n-1}}\, u(a) for ∣x−a∣=r<R\abs{x - a} = r < R.

Going deeper

For a student

A chain of discs gives the general form on a connected open set Ω\Omega with a compact subset KK. There is a constant CC such that sup⁡Ku≤Cinf⁡Ku\sup_K u \le C \inf_K u for every nonnegative harmonic uu on Ω\Omega. This is the key estimate behind Harnack's principle on increasing sequences of harmonic functions. It is used in Perron's method for the Dirichlet problem and in the study of positive harmonic functions, such as the Herglotz representation theorem. Moser extended Harnack's inequality to solutions of elliptic equations in divergence form with measurable coefficients.
