Definition

Let 𝔻={z∈ℂ:∣z∣<1}\mathbb{D} = \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} < 1} be the unit disc and 𝕋={ζ∈ℂ:∣ζ∣=1}\mathbb{T} = \set{\zeta \in \C : \abs{\zeta} = 1} its boundary circle. The Poisson kernel of 𝔻\mathbb{D} is the function P ⁣:𝔻×𝕋→ℝP \colon \mathbb{D} \times \mathbb{T} \to \R given by P(z,ζ)=1−∣z∣2∣ζ−z∣2.P(z, \zeta) = \frac{1 - \abs{z}^2}{\abs{\zeta - z}^2}. In polar form, for 0≤r<10 \le r < 1 and real θ\theta, one writes Pr(θ)=P(reiθ,1)=1−r21−2rcos⁡θ+r2P_r(\theta) = P(r e^{i\theta}, 1) = \dfrac{1 - r^2}{1 - 2r\cos\theta + r^2}.

Remarks

The kernel is positive, and P(z,ζ)=Re⁡ζ+zζ−zP(z, \zeta) = \operatorname{Re} \dfrac{\zeta + z}{\zeta - z}, so z↦P(z,ζ)z \mapsto P(z, \zeta) is harmonic on 𝔻\mathbb{D}. It has the expansion Pr(θ)=∑n∈ℤr∣n∣einθP_r(\theta) = \sum_{n \in \Z} r^{\abs{n}} e^{i n\theta}, from which 12π∫02πPr(θ) dθ=1\frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} P_r(\theta)\, d\theta = 1. Example: at z=0z = 0 one gets P(0,ζ)=1P(0, \zeta) = 1 for every ζ\zeta, so the Poisson integral at the centre is the plain mean over the circle. For a continuous function φ\varphi on 𝕋\mathbb{T}, the Poisson integral u(z)=12π∫02πP(z,eit)φ(eit) dtu(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} P(z, e^{it}) \varphi(e^{it})\, dt is harmonic on 𝔻\mathbb{D} and extends continuously to φ\varphi on 𝕋\mathbb{T}. Non-example: the function (z,ζ)↦1/∣ζ−z∣2(z, \zeta) \mapsto 1/\abs{\zeta - z}^2 is not the Poisson kernel; it lacks the factor 1−∣z∣21 - \abs{z}^2, it is not harmonic in zz, and its integral over the circle is 1/(1−∣z∣2)1/(1 - \abs{z}^2), not 11. For the upper half-plane, the Poisson kernel is 1πy(x−t)2+y2\dfrac{1}{\pi}\dfrac{y}{(x - t)^2 + y^2} for x+iyx + iy with y>0y > 0 and real tt.
