Statement

Let 𝔻={z∈ℂ:∣z∣<1}\mathbb{D} = \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} < 1}. Let ω ⁣:𝔻→𝔻\omega \colon \mathbb{D} \to \mathbb{D} be a holomorphic function with ω(0)=0\omega(0) = 0, and let FF be a holomorphic function on 𝔻\mathbb{D}. Then for every pp with 0<p<∞0 < p < \infty and every rr with 0<r<10 < r < 1, ∫02π∣F(ω(reiθ))∣p dθ≤∫02π∣F(reiθ)∣p dθ.\int_0^{2\pi} \abs{F(\omega(r e^{i\theta}))}^p \, d\theta \le \int_0^{2\pi} \abs{F(r e^{i\theta})}^p \, d\theta.

Remarks

The function ∣F∣p\abs{F}^p is subharmonic. Let uu be the harmonic function on the disc ∣z∣<r\abs{z} < r with boundary values ∣F∣p\abs{F}^p on ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r, given by the Poisson kernel; then ∣F∣p≤u\abs{F}^p \le u on ∣z∣≤r\abs{z} \le r. By the Schwarz lemma, ∣ω(z)∣≤∣z∣\abs{\omega(z)} \le \abs{z}, so ω\omega maps the closed disc of radius rr into itself and ∣F∘ω∣p≤u∘ω\abs{F \circ \omega}^p \le u \circ \omega there. Since u∘ωu \circ \omega is harmonic, its mean over ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r is u(ω(0))=u(0)u(\omega(0)) = u(0), which is the mean of ∣F∣p\abs{F}^p over ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r. The hypothesis ω(0)=0\omega(0) = 0 is needed. For the constant map ω≡c\omega \equiv c with 0<c<10 < c < 1 and F(z)=zF(z) = z, the left side is 2πcp2\pi c^p and the right side is 2πrp2\pi r^p. So the inequality fails for r<cr < c.

Going deeper

For a student

Taking the supremum over rr shows that the composition operator F↦F∘ωF \mapsto F \circ \omega is a contraction on each Hardy space HpH^p when ω(0)=0\omega(0) = 0. For a general holomorphic self-map ω\omega one composes with a disc automorphism moving ω(0)\omega(0) to 00, which shows that every composition operator on HpH^p is bounded. The proof only uses that ∣F∣p\abs{F}^p is subharmonic, so the same inequality holds for any subharmonic function in place of ∣F∣p\abs{F}^p. This is the starting point of the theory of composition operators on spaces of analytic functions.
