Definition
Let be an open set in . A function is subharmonic if:
- is upper semicontinuous, that is, is open for every real .
- satisfies the sub-mean value inequality: for every and with ,
Remarks
Some authors also require that is not identically on any connected component of . The same definition, with averages over spheres, gives subharmonic functions on open sets of . It is equivalent to require the inequality only for all small enough at each point. Example: is continuous, and its mean over the circle of radius about is , so is subharmonic. Non-example: is continuous, but its mean over the circle of radius about is , so clause 2 fails. A function of class is subharmonic if and only if its Laplacian satisfies . A function is harmonic if and only if both and are subharmonic and is finite. For a holomorphic function on , the function is subharmonic, with value at the zeros of .
