Functions of a complex variable Harmonic and subharmonic functions in the plane Theorem

Schwarz integral formula

Builds on Holomorphic functionPoisson kernelHarmonic function

Statement

Let 𝔻={z∈ℂ:∣z∣<1}\mathbb{D} = \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} < 1}. Let ff be a holomorphic function on 𝔻\mathbb{D} that extends continuously to the closed disc 𝔻‾\overline{\mathbb{D}}, and let u=Re⁡fu = \operatorname{Re} f. Then for every z∈𝔻z \in \mathbb{D}, f(z)=12π∫02πeit+zeit−z u(eit) dt+iIm⁡f(0).f(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} \frac{e^{it} + z}{e^{it} - z}\, u(e^{it})\, dt + i \operatorname{Im} f(0).

Remarks

Call the integral S(z)S(z). The kernel (eit+z)/(eit−z)(e^{it} + z)/(e^{it} - z) is holomorphic in zz, so SS is holomorphic on 𝔻\mathbb{D}, and its real part is the Poisson integral of uu with the Poisson kernel. Since uu is harmonic in 𝔻\mathbb{D} and continuous on 𝔻‾\overline{\mathbb{D}}, the Poisson integral of uu equals uu. So f−Sf - S is holomorphic with real part 00, and hence it is a purely imaginary constant. At z=0z = 0 the integral is the mean of uu over the circle, which is the real number u(0)u(0), so the constant is iIm⁡f(0)i \operatorname{Im} f(0). Example: for f(z)=zf(z) = z one has u(eit)=cos⁡tu(e^{it}) = \cos t, and the formula gives 12π∫02πeit+zeit−zcos⁡t dt=z\frac{1}{2\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} \frac{e^{it} + z}{e^{it} - z}\cos t \, dt = z.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula is the holomorphic counterpart of the Poisson integral: taking real parts of both sides gives the Poisson representation of uu. It solves the problem of finding a holomorphic function with prescribed real part on the boundary, which is a simple Riemann–Hilbert type problem. It is used to prove the Herglotz representation theorem and the Borel–Carathéodory theorem, and it has versions for the upper half-plane.
