Hidden-variable theory

Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space. A hidden-variable theory, or ontological model, of quantum mechanics on consists of the following data:
- a measurable space , whose points are the hidden variables, or ontic states;
- for each pure quantum state , a probability measure on ;
- for each orthonormal basis of , measurable functions with for all .
It must reproduce the Born rule: for all , and . The theory is deterministic if all values are or .
Remarks
Example: the Beltrametti–Bugajski model takes to be the set of unit vectors up to phase, the point mass at , and . The Born rule holds by construction, so every quantum system has this trivial model. Non-example: taking for all satisfies clause 3, but it gives probability instead of when and . A deterministic theory is noncontextual if the value of depends only on the ray of and not on the rest of the basis . For a bipartite system, the theory is local if the response functions for a product measurement factorize into a function of the local setting on each side.
