Statement

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space of finite dimension dd. Let XX be a random variable with values in a finite set 𝒳\mathcal{X} and distribution (px)x∈𝒳(p_x)_{x \in \mathcal{X}}. For each x∈𝒳x \in \mathcal{X} let ρx\rho_x be a density operator on HH, and let ρ=∑xpxρx\rho = \sum_x p_x \rho_x. Let {Ey}y∈𝒴\set{E_y}_{y \in \mathcal{Y}} be a POVM on HH with finite outcome set 𝒴\mathcal{Y}. Let YY be the outcome of this measurement on ρX\rho_X, so that Pr⁡(Y=y∣X=x)=tr⁡(Eyρx)\Pr(Y = y \mid X = x) = \tr(E_y \rho_x). Then the classical mutual information of XX and YY satisfies I(X:Y)≤χ,χ=S(ρ)−∑xpxS(ρx),I(X : Y) \le \chi, \qquad \chi = S(\rho) - \sum_{x} p_x S(\rho_x), where SS is the von Neumann entropy. The quantity χ\chi is the Holevo quantity of the ensemble {px,ρx}\set{p_x, \rho_x}.

Remarks

Proof idea: encode XX in the classical-quantum state σXQ=∑xpx∣x⟩⟨x∣⊗ρx\sigma_{XQ} = \sum_x p_x \lvert x \rangle\langle x \rvert \otimes \rho_x. Its quantum mutual information is I(X:Q)σ=χI(X:Q)_\sigma = \chi. The measurement is a quantum channel on QQ that turns σXQ\sigma_{XQ} into the classical state of (X,Y)(X, Y). Quantum mutual information does not increase under local channels, a consequence of strong subadditivity, so I(X:Y)≤χI(X:Y) \le \chi.

Since χ≤S(ρ)≤log⁡d\chi \le S(\rho) \le \log d, at most log⁡2d\log_2 d bits about XX can be read out of a dd-dimensional system. For nn qubits, d=2nd = 2^n, so nn qubits carry at most nn bits of accessible classical information. Example: if the ρx\rho_x are pure states, then χ=S(ρ)\chi = S(\rho). For the two non-orthogonal states ∣0⟩\lvert 0 \rangle and ∣+⟩=(∣0⟩+∣1⟩)/2\lvert + \rangle = (\lvert 0 \rangle + \lvert 1 \rangle)/\sqrt 2 sent with probability 1/21/2 each, χ=S(ρ)<1\chi = S(\rho) < 1 bit, so they can never be told apart perfectly.

Going deeper

For a student

The Holevo quantity χ\chi is the main tool for classical communication over quantum channels. The Holevo–Schumacher–Westmoreland theorem shows that χ\chi, maximised over input ensembles, is achievable with many uses of a channel, so χ\chi is the one-shot building block of the classical capacity. The proof by monotonicity of mutual information is a typical use of strong subadditivity. The bound I(X:Y)≤χI(X:Y) \le \chi is usually strict; the maximum of I(X:Y)I(X:Y) over all measurements is called the accessible information.
