Homogeneous polynomial
Builds on Polynomials in several variablesDegree of a polynomial
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a polynomial in several variables. The total degree of a monomial is . Let be an integer. The polynomial is homogeneous of degree if every monomial that appears in with a nonzero coefficient has total degree . The zero polynomial is homogeneous of every degree.
Remarks
Example: in is homogeneous of degree . Check: the monomials , and have total degrees , and .
Non-example: is not homogeneous, because its monomials have total degrees and .
The polynomial is homogeneous of degree if and only if in . Every polynomial is in a unique way a finite sum where each is homogeneous of degree ; these are the homogeneous components of . A homogeneous polynomial is also called a form; forms of degree , and are linear, quadratic and cubic forms. In one variable, the nonzero homogeneous polynomials of degree are the with , whose degree is .
