Definition

Let KK be a field. The field KK is quasi-algebraically closed, or a C1C_1 field, if the following holds. For all integers n>d≥1n > d \ge 1, every homogeneous polynomial f∈K[x1,…,xn]f \in K[x_1, \ldots, x_n] of degree dd has a zero (a1,…,an)∈Kn(a_1, \ldots, a_n) \in K^n with (a1,…,an)≠(0,…,0)(a_1, \ldots, a_n) \ne (0, \ldots, 0).

Remarks

Every algebraically closed field is C1C_1. Indeed, let g(t)=f(t,1,0,…,0)g(t) = f(t, 1, 0, \ldots, 0). If gg is not constant, it has a root t0t_0, and (t0,1,0,…,0)(t_0, 1, 0, \ldots, 0) is a nontrivial zero of ff. If gg is constant, the coefficient of x1dx_1^d in ff is 00, so (1,0,…,0)(1, 0, \ldots, 0) is a nontrivial zero of ff.

Example: a finite field 𝔽q\F_q is C1C_1. Check: by the Chevalley–Warning theorem, the number of zeros in 𝔽qn\F_q^n of a polynomial of degree d<nd < n is divisible by the characteristic. The zero vector is one zero, so there is another.

Non-example: ℝ\R is not C1C_1. The form x2+y2+z2x^2 + y^2 + z^2 has degree 22 in 33 variables, but its only real zero is (0,0,0)(0, 0, 0).

More generally, KK is a CiC_i field if every homogeneous polynomial of degree d≥1d \ge 1 in n>din > d^i variables has a nontrivial zero; C1C_1 is the case i=1i = 1.
