Image of J
Builds on J-homomorphismStable homotopy groups of spheresSpecial orthogonal group
Definition
Let be the infinite special orthogonal group, and let . Let be the stable J-homomorphism into the stable homotopy group of spheres . The image of J in degree is the subgroup .
Remarks
By Bott periodicity, for the group is if , if , and otherwise. For , the image is cyclic of order the denominator of , where is the Bernoulli number. For with , is injective and the image is .
Example: in degree , gives , and the image of J is all of .
Non-example: in degree , , so the image of J is ; the nonzero element of is not in the image of J.
J. F. Adams determined the image, with the upper bound depending on the Adams conjecture, which was later proved by Quillen and by Sullivan.
