Definition

Let (X,μ)(X, \mu) be a measure space and let Θ⊆ℝn\Theta \subseteq \R^n be open. A statistical model is a family {p(⋅ ;θ):θ∈Θ}\set{p(\cdot\,; \theta) : \theta \in \Theta} of positive probability densities on XX with respect to μ\mu such that:

  1. θ↦p(x;θ)\theta \mapsto p(x; \theta) is smooth for every x∈Xx \in X, and derivatives in θ\theta may be taken under the integral sign;
  2. with ℓ(x;θ)=log⁡p(x;θ)\ell(x; \theta) = \log p(x; \theta) and ∂i=∂/∂θi\partial_i = \partial/\partial\theta^i, the functions ∂1ℓ,…,∂nℓ\partial_1 \ell, \dots, \partial_n \ell of xx are linearly independent for each θ\theta.

The Fisher information metric is the Riemannian metric on Θ\Theta given by gij(θ)=𝔼θ[∂iℓ  ∂jℓ],g_{ij}(\theta) = \mathbb{E}_\theta\left[\partial_i \ell \; \partial_j \ell\right], where 𝔼θ\mathbb{E}_\theta is the expected value for the density p(⋅ ;θ)p(\cdot\,; \theta). For a real number α\alpha, the α\alpha-connection is the affine connection on Θ\Theta with Γij,k(α)(θ)=𝔼θ[(∂i∂jℓ+1−α2 ∂iℓ  ∂jℓ)∂kℓ],\Gamma^{(\alpha)}_{ij,k}(\theta) = \mathbb{E}_\theta\left[\left(\partial_i \partial_j \ell + \frac{1 - \alpha}{2}\, \partial_i \ell \; \partial_j \ell\right) \partial_k \ell\right], where Γij,k(α)=g(∇∂i(α)∂j,∂k)\Gamma^{(\alpha)}_{ij,k} = g\left(\nabla^{(\alpha)}_{\partial_i} \partial_j, \partial_k\right). Information geometry is the study of a statistical model through its Fisher metric and its α\alpha-connections.

Remarks

Example: the normal densities p(x;μ,σ)=(2πσ2)−1/2e−(x−μ)2/(2σ2)p(x; \mu, \sigma) = (2\pi\sigma^2)^{-1/2} e^{-(x - \mu)^2/(2\sigma^2)} on ℝ\R, with θ=(μ,σ)\theta = (\mu, \sigma) and σ>0\sigma > 0. Here ∂μℓ=(x−μ)/σ2\partial_\mu \ell = (x - \mu)/\sigma^2 and ∂σℓ=(Z2−1)/σ\partial_\sigma \ell = (Z^2 - 1)/\sigma with Z=(x−μ)/σZ = (x - \mu)/\sigma standard normal. Since 𝔼[Z2]=1\mathbb{E}[Z^2] = 1, 𝔼[Z4]=3\mathbb{E}[Z^4] = 3 and odd moments vanish, the metric is (dμ2+2 dσ2)/σ2(d\mu^2 + 2\, d\sigma^2)/\sigma^2. This is a hyperbolic plane of constant curvature −1/2-1/2. Non-example: the family p(x;θ1,θ2)p(x; \theta_1, \theta_2) of normal densities with mean θ1+θ2\theta_1 + \theta_2 and variance 11 fails clause 2, since ∂1ℓ=∂2ℓ\partial_1 \ell = \partial_2 \ell; its Fisher matrix has all entries 11 and is singular. The 00-connection is the Levi-Civita connection of gg. The 11-connection and the (−1)(-1)-connection are called the exponential and the mixture connection, and they are dual to each other with respect to gg. The Fisher metric is the Hessian at θ′=θ\theta' = \theta of the Kullback–Leibler divergence D(pθ ∥ pθ′)D(p_\theta \,\|\, p_{\theta'}).
