Inner automorphism

Definition

Let GG be a group and let g∈Gg \in G. The inner automorphism given by gg is the map cg ⁣:G→Gc_g \colon G \to G, cg(x)=gxg−1c_g(x) = gxg^{-1}. The set of all inner automorphisms of GG is written Inn⁡(G)\operatorname{Inn}(G).

Remarks

Each cgc_g is an automorphism of GG, with inverse cg−1c_{g^{-1}}. Since cg∘ch=cghc_g \circ c_h = c_{gh}, the map g↦cgg \mapsto c_g is a homomorphism from GG to Aut⁡(G)\operatorname{Aut}(G), and Inn⁡(G)\operatorname{Inn}(G) is its image. The subgroup Inn⁡(G)\operatorname{Inn}(G) is normal in Aut⁡(G)\operatorname{Aut}(G), because α∘cg∘α−1=cα(g)\alpha \circ c_g \circ \alpha^{-1} = c_{\alpha(g)} for each automorphism α\alpha. In an abelian group, each inner automorphism is the identity map.

Explanations

L1 human

Each element of a group gives a symmetry of the group: conjugate everything by this element. These symmetries are called inner, because they come from inside the group. In a group where all elements commute, conjugation changes nothing.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
