Outer automorphism group
Definition
Let be a group. The outer automorphism group of is the quotient group .
Remarks
The quotient exists because is a normal subgroup of . An automorphism that is not inner is called an outer automorphism, but the elements of are cosets, not automorphisms. For an abelian group, is trivial, so . The symmetric group is the only symmetric group with nontrivial outer automorphism group.
Explanations
L1 human
Some symmetries of a group come from conjugation by its own elements, and some do not. The outer automorphism group keeps only the second kind, up to the first kind. For many groups it is small or trivial.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
