Interference
Builds on Modulus of a complex numberArgument of a complex number
Definition
Let and be complex amplitudes of two monochromatic scalar waves of the same frequency at a point. Write with the intensity and the phase. The intensity of the superposition is Interference is the presence of the term , the interference term. The interference is constructive when and destructive when .
Remarks
The formula follows from , using the modulus and argument of complex numbers. Over a region where varies, the intensity oscillates between and . The visibility of the fringes is .
Example: two waves of equal intensity give . This is at constructive points and at destructive points, with visibility .
Non-example: for vector fields the interference term is . Two waves with orthogonal linear polarisations have , so their intensities simply add and there are no fringes.
