J-homomorphism
Builds on Homotopy groupSpecial orthogonal group
Definition
Let , and let be the special orthogonal group. Write , and with base point the image of . For a map , define as follows:
- on , set , the class of ;
- on , let be constant at the base point.
The J-homomorphism is the map , , on homotopy groups.
Remarks
The two clauses agree on , since preserves the unit sphere, so . The map is a well-defined group homomorphism.
Example: for and , let send to rotation by , viewing as . Then is the Hopf map, up to sign and homotopy, and it generates .
Non-example: suppose is allowed to be any invertible linear map. Then need not lie on for , and may even leave , so the two clauses do not define a map.
The maps commute with the stabilisation maps and with suspension, so they give the stable J-homomorphism .
