Real functions Classical inequalities Theorem
Landau–Kolmogorov inequality
Builds on Higher derivativeSupremum
Statement
Let and be integers. There is a constant , depending only on and , with the following property. Let be times differentiable, with and its -th derivative bounded on . Then is bounded on and where is the supremum of .
Remarks
Proof idea for and : let and . By Taylor's theorem, for some . Subtracting gives for every , and the choice gives . The constant here is the best possible on . On the half-line the same kind of bound holds with the best constant in place of .
The exponents are forced by scaling: replacing by multiplies by .

For a student
These are interpolation inequalities: the middle derivative is controlled by a weighted geometric mean of the two ends. They are a model for the Gagliardo–Nirenberg inequalities for Sobolev norms. The best constants on are known for all and , and they are attained by functions related to Euler splines. For and the best constant is .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
