Definition

Let g ⁣:ℝ→ℝg \colon \R \to \R be a non-decreasing, right-continuous function. Let μg\mu_g be its Lebesgue–Stieltjes measure, the Borel measure with μg((a,b])=g(b)−g(a)\mu_g((a, b]) = g(b) - g(a) for all a<ba < b. Let f ⁣:ℝ→ℝf \colon \R \to \R be a Borel measurable function that is integrable with respect to μg\mu_g. The Lebesgue–Stieltjes integral of ff with respect to gg is the Lebesgue integral ∫ℝf dg=∫ℝf dμg.\int_\R f \, dg = \int_\R f \, d\mu_g.

Remarks

Example: let g=𝟏[0,∞)g = \mathbf{1}_{[0, \infty)}, the Heaviside step function with g(0)=1g(0) = 1, which is non-decreasing and right-continuous. Then μg\mu_g is the Dirac measure at 00, so ∫f dg=f(0)\int f \, dg = f(0) for every Borel function ff. For g(x)=xg(x) = x the measure μg\mu_g is Lebesgue measure, and the integral is the usual Lebesgue integral.

Non-example: g(x)=−xg(x) = -x is not non-decreasing, so the definition does not apply directly. The formula μg((a,b])=g(b)−g(a)\mu_g((a, b]) = g(b) - g(a) would give negative mass.

For gg of bounded variation and right-continuous, one writes g=g1−g2g = g_1 - g_2 with g1,g2g_1, g_2 non-decreasing and right-continuous, and sets ∫f dg=∫f dg1−∫f dg2\int f \, dg = \int f \, dg_1 - \int f \, dg_2. On [a,b][a, b] one writes ∫(a,b]f dg\int_{(a, b]} f \, dg, and the endpoints matter when gg jumps there. If ff is continuous on [a,b][a, b], the integral over (a,b](a, b] equals the Riemann–Stieltjes integral ∫abf dg\int_a^b f \, dg. If gg is absolutely continuous on bounded intervals, then ∫f dg=∫f(x)g′(x) dx\int f \, dg = \int f(x) g'(x) \, dx.
