Commutative algebra Definition
Length of a module
Definition
Let be a ring and let be a left module over . A chain of submodules of has length . The length of is the supremum of the lengths of all such chains, an element of .
Remarks
Example: for a finite-dimensional vector space over a field , . Indeed, a strict chain of subspaces raises the dimension at each step, and a chain built from a basis has steps. Non-example of finite length: , because has length for every . A composition series of is a chain whose factors are simple modules. A module has finite length if and only if it has a composition series, and then by the Jordan–Hölder theorem for modules. For a short exact sequence , one has . The group version of a composition series is the composition series of a group.
