Definition

Let UU be an open subset of ℝn\R^n, let f ⁣:U→ℝnf \colon U \to \R^n be locally Lipschitz, and let φ\varphi be the flow of the autonomous system x′=f(x)x' = f(x). Let x∈Ux \in U be such that the solution through xx is defined for all t≥0t \ge 0. The ω\omega-limit set of xx is the set ω(x)\omega(x) of points y∈Uy \in U for which there is a sequence tk→+∞t_k \to +\infty with φtk(x)→y\varphi_{t_k}(x) \to y. Let the solution through xx be defined for all t≤0t \le 0. The α\alpha-limit set α(x)\alpha(x) is the set of points y∈Uy \in U with φtk(x)→y\varphi_{t_k}(x) \to y for some sequence tk→−∞t_k \to -\infty.

Remarks

Equivalently, ω(x)=⋂T≥0{φt(x):t≥T}‾∩U\omega(x) = \bigcap_{T \ge 0} \overline{\set{\varphi_t(x) : t \ge T}} \cap U, where the bar denotes the closure in ℝn\R^n. The set ω(x)\omega(x) is closed in UU and invariant. If the forward orbit of xx lies in a compact subset of UU, then ω(x)\omega(x) is nonempty, compact and connected, and φt(x)\varphi_t(x) tends to ω(x)\omega(x) as t→∞t \to \infty. Example: in polar coordinates, let r′=r(1−r2)r' = r(1 - r^2) and θ′=1\theta' = 1 in the plane. For x≠0x \ne 0 the radius tends to 11 while the angle keeps turning. So every point of the unit circle is a limit of φtk(x)\varphi_{t_k}(x) for suitable tk→∞t_k \to \infty, and ω(x)\omega(x) is the unit circle. For 0<∣x∣<10 < \abs{x} < 1, the radius tends to 00 as t→−∞t \to -\infty, so α(x)={0}\alpha(x) = \set{0}. Non-example: for x′=1x' = 1 on ℝ\R, the solution φt(x)=x+t\varphi_t(x) = x + t has no convergent sequence φtk(x)\varphi_{t_k}(x) with tk→∞t_k \to \infty, so ω(x)\omega(x) is empty. This is possible because the forward orbit is not bounded.
