Definition
Let be a continuous current density, a vector field with compact support and . Its magnetic dipole moment is the vector where is the cross product. For a steady current in a thin closed wire , the magnetic dipole moment is , a line integral.
Remarks
Because and has compact support, , and so does not depend on the choice of origin. For a plane loop enclosing area with unit normal fixed by the right-hand rule, . Far from the currents, the vector potential is , and the magnetic field is approximately , with . In a uniform field , the torque on the distribution is and its energy is . Example: a circular loop of radius in the plane with counterclockwise current has . Non-example: a current flowing straight along a line from one point to another is not a closed loop and has at its ends, so the definition does not apply. The unit of is the ampere square metre.
