Definition
Let be a region of space and an interval of time. The magnetic field in is a vector field with the following property. Let a point charge be at at time , moving with velocity . Besides the electric force , it feels the magnetic force where is the cross product and is the electric field.
Remarks
The field is determined by this property: the forces for velocities and give the components of orthogonal to and to , hence all of . Together with , the field satisfies Maxwell's equations. Example: the field is a uniform magnetic field of strength along the third axis; a charge moving along the first axis is pushed along the second axis. Non-example: the vector field is not a possible magnetic field, since its divergence is , while every magnetic field is divergence-free. Some texts call the magnetic flux density and reserve "magnetic field" for , where is the magnetization. The SI unit of is the tesla.
