Definition

Let SS be a finite set and let PP be the transition matrix of an irreducible and aperiodic Markov chain on SS. Let π\pi be its stationary distribution. The total variation distance between probability distributions μ\mu and ν\nu on SS is ∥μ−ν∥TV=max⁡A⊆S∣μ(A)−ν(A)∣=12∑x∈S∣μ(x)−ν(x)∣.\norm{\mu - \nu}_{TV} = \max_{A \subseteq S} \abs{\mu(A) - \nu(A)} = \frac12 \sum_{x \in S} \abs{\mu(x) - \nu(x)}. For an integer t≥0t \ge 0 let d(t)=max⁡x∈S∥Pt(x,⋅)−π∥TVd(t) = \max_{x \in S} \norm{P^t(x, \cdot) - \pi}_{TV}, where Pt(x,⋅)P^t(x, \cdot) is row xx of PtP^t. For ε∈(0,1)\varepsilon \in (0, 1), the mixing time is tmix(ε)=min⁡{t≥0:d(t)≤ε},t_{\mathrm{mix}}(\varepsilon) = \min\set{t \ge 0 : d(t) \le \varepsilon}, and tmix=tmix(1/4)t_{\mathrm{mix}} = t_{\mathrm{mix}}(1/4).

Remarks

The minimum exists because d(t)→0d(t) \to 0 by the convergence theorem for ergodic chains. Example: on S={1,2}S = \set{1, 2} let every entry of PP be 1/21/2. Then π=(1/2,1/2)\pi = (1/2, 1/2), d(0)=1/2d(0) = 1/2 and Pt(x,⋅)=πP^t(x, \cdot) = \pi for t≥1t \ge 1, so tmix=1t_{\mathrm{mix}} = 1. Non-example: for P=(0110)P = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} the chain is periodic, d(t)=1/2d(t) = 1/2 for all tt, and tmix(ε)t_{\mathrm{mix}}(\varepsilon) does not exist for ε<1/2\varepsilon < 1/2. The function dd is nonincreasing, and tmix(ε)≤⌈log⁡2(1/ε)⌉ tmixt_{\mathrm{mix}}(\varepsilon) \le \ceil{\log_2 (1/\varepsilon)} \, t_{\mathrm{mix}}.
