Definition

Let SS be a finite set of configurations, let H ⁣:S→ℝH \colon S \to \R be an energy function, and let β>0\beta > 0 be the inverse temperature. Let π(σ)=e−βH(σ)/Z\pi(\sigma) = e^{-\beta H(\sigma)} / Z with Z=∑τ∈Se−βH(τ)Z = \sum_{\tau \in S} e^{-\beta H(\tau)} be the Boltzmann distribution, and let A ⁣:S→ℝA \colon S \to \R be an observable. A Monte Carlo method for the thermal average ⟨A⟩=∑σA(σ)π(σ)\langle A \rangle = \sum_\sigma A(\sigma) \pi(\sigma) consists of:

  1. an irreducible Markov chain (Xt)t≥0(X_t)_{t \ge 0} on SS with transition matrix PP and stationary distribution π\pi, often checked by detailed balance: π(σ)P(σ,τ)=π(τ)P(τ,σ)\pi(\sigma) P(\sigma, \tau) = \pi(\tau) P(\tau, \sigma) for all σ,τ\sigma, \tau;
  2. the estimator Aˉn=1n∑t=t0+1t0+nA(Xt)\bar A_n = \frac{1}{n} \sum_{t = t_0 + 1}^{t_0 + n} A(X_t), where t0≥0t_0 \ge 0 is a number of discarded initial steps.

Remarks

For an irreducible chain on a finite set with stationary distribution π\pi, the ergodic theorem for Markov chains gives Aˉn→⟨A⟩\bar A_n \to \langle A \rangle almost surely as n→∞n \to \infty, for every starting state. The Markov chain avoids computing ZZ, since only ratios π(τ)/π(σ)=e−β(H(τ)−H(σ))\pi(\tau)/\pi(\sigma) = e^{-\beta (H(\tau) - H(\sigma))} appear. Example: the Metropolis algorithm for the Ising model picks a uniform random site, proposes to flip its spin, and accepts with probability min⁡(1,e−βΔH)\min(1, e^{-\beta \Delta H}), where ΔH\Delta H is the energy change. The proposal is symmetric, so π(σ)P(σ,τ)=1∣V∣min⁡(π(σ),π(τ))\pi(\sigma) P(\sigma, \tau) = \frac{1}{\abs{V}} \min(\pi(\sigma), \pi(\tau)) for a single flip, where VV is the set of sites. This is symmetric in σ,τ\sigma, \tau, which checks detailed balance. Non-example: averaging AA over uniform samples from SS estimates the average at infinite temperature, not ⟨A⟩\langle A \rangle. Its chain has the uniform stationary distribution, so clause 1 fails for β>0\beta > 0 unless HH is constant. The error of Aˉn\bar A_n is proportional to τ/n\sqrt{\tau / n}, where τ\tau is the integrated autocorrelation time of AA; near a critical point τ\tau becomes large, which motivates cluster algorithms.
