Nambu mechanics

Definition
Let be open, with coordinates . The Nambu bracket of smooth functions on is the Jacobian determinant Let be smooth functions on . The Nambu system with Hamiltonians is the system where is the gradient and is the cross product. Equivalently, every smooth function evolves by .
Remarks
The bracket is antisymmetric in its three arguments, satisfies the Leibniz rule in each argument, and satisfies a generalized Jacobi identity, the fundamental identity. Since , both and are first integrals. The vector field has divergence , so its flow preserves volume. On the construction uses Hamiltonians and the Jacobian determinant.
Example: Euler's equations of a free rigid body with principal moments and angular momentum . Take and . Then and with , and the system is ; its first component is .
Non-example: the damped system on is not a Nambu system for any , since its divergence is .
