Functions of a complex variable Definition

Nevanlinna class

Builds on Unit discHolomorphic function

Definition

Let 𝔻\mathbb{D} be the open unit disc. For x>0x > 0 let log⁑+x=max⁑(log⁑x,0)\log^+ x = \max(\log x, 0), and let log⁑+0=0\log^+ 0 = 0. The Nevanlinna class NN is the set of holomorphic functions f ⁣:𝔻→ℂf \colon \mathbb{D} \to \C such that sup⁑0<r<112Ο€βˆ«02Ο€log⁑+∣f(reit)βˆ£β€‰dt<∞.\sup_{0 < r < 1} \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} \log^+ \abs{f(r e^{it})} \, dt < \infty.

Remarks

A holomorphic function on 𝔻\mathbb{D} lies in NN if and only if f=g/hf = g/h with gg and hh bounded holomorphic on 𝔻\mathbb{D} and hh without zeros. Such functions are said to be of bounded type. Since log⁑+x≀xp/p\log^+ x \le x^p / p for p>0p > 0, every Hardy space HpH^p is contained in NN.

Example: f(z)=exp⁑(11βˆ’z)f(z) = \exp\left(\frac{1}{1 - z}\right). For z=reitz = r e^{it} one has log⁑∣f(z)∣=Re⁑11βˆ’z=1βˆ’rcos⁑t1βˆ’2rcos⁑t+r2>0\log \abs{f(z)} = \operatorname{Re} \frac{1}{1 - z} = \frac{1 - r \cos t}{1 - 2r \cos t + r^2} > 0. This equals 12(1+1βˆ’r21βˆ’2rcos⁑t+r2)\frac{1}{2}\left(1 + \frac{1 - r^2}{1 - 2r \cos t + r^2}\right), and the Poisson kernel has mean 11, so the mean of log⁑+∣f∣\log^+ \abs{f} on each circle is exactly 11. So f∈Nf \in N, although ff lies in no HpH^p.

Non-example: f(z)=sin⁑(Ο€1βˆ’z)f(z) = \sin\left(\frac{\pi}{1 - z}\right) is holomorphic on 𝔻\mathbb{D} but not in NN. Its zeros are zk=1βˆ’1/kz_k = 1 - 1/k for kβ‰₯1k \ge 1, and βˆ‘k(1βˆ’βˆ£zk∣)=βˆ‘k1/k\sum_k (1 - \abs{z_k}) = \sum_k 1/k diverges. By Jensen's formula, the zeros of a function in NN that is not identically 00 satisfy the Blaschke condition βˆ‘(1βˆ’βˆ£zk∣)<∞\sum (1 - \abs{z_k}) < \infty.
