Definition
Let be an open set in with , and let be an integer. For a function of class , write for the collection of all partial derivatives of order , in multi-index notation. Let be a given function of these derivatives and of . A partial differential equation of order at most in is an equation of the following form. The function is the unknown. A classical solution is a function that satisfies the equation at every point of . A system of partial differential equations is defined in the same way with and taking values in and .
Remarks
Example: with and variables , the equation is a partial differential equation. The function is a classical solution on , since and . Non-example: for involves derivatives with respect to one variable only, so it is an ordinary differential equation. Complex-valued unknowns are treated in the same way. Many PDEs also have solutions in a weaker sense, such as weak solutions, which need not be of class .
