Definition
Let be a connected CW complex with a base point. Let be a normal subgroup of the fundamental group that is perfect, that is, equals its own commutator subgroup . A plus construction of with respect to is a connected CW complex together with a map such that:
- The homomorphism is surjective and its kernel is .
- For every -module , the map induces isomorphisms in homology with local coefficients, for all .
Remarks
A plus construction exists for every such pair , and it is unique up to homotopy equivalence under . One builds it by attaching -cells along loops that represent generators of , and then -cells that cancel the new classes in degree . The perfectness of is what makes the second step possible. Every map that kills on factors through , uniquely up to homotopy.
Example: let be a ring and , the classifying space of the discrete group . By Whitehead's lemma, the elementary subgroup is perfect and equals . The plus construction for gives , with , and Quillen defines for .
Non-example: take and , which is not perfect. A map with clause 1 makes trivial, so by the Hurewicz theorem. But , so clause 2 fails for .
