Polynomial long division

Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let , where has degree and its leading coefficient is a unit of . Polynomial long division of by is the following procedure.
- Start with and .
- While and , let be the leading coefficient of and , and replace by and by .
- When or , stop and return the quotient and the remainder .
Remarks
Each pass of step 2 removes the leading term of , so drops and the procedure stops. The equation holds at every step, so the output is the unique pair of the division algorithm for polynomials. Example: divide by in . The steps add , then , then to the quotient, and the remainder is . Check: . Non-example: in the procedure does not apply to , because the leading coefficient is not a unit, and the first step for would need the coefficient . Division by a monic is often written in a compact table, called synthetic division; it is Horner's method.
