Proof of Cassini's identity by induction

Builds on Fibonacci sequenceInduction from an arbitrary base case

Proof

We argue by induction from the base case n=1n = 1.

  1. Let FmF_m be the Fibonacci numbers, with F0=0F_0 = 0, F1=1F_1 = 1 and Fm+2=Fm+1+FmF_{m+2} = F_{m+1} + F_m. For n≥1n \ge 1, let P(n)P(n) be the claim Fn−1Fn+1−Fn2=(−1)nF_{n-1} F_{n+1} - F_n^2 = (-1)^n.
  2. Base case. F2=F1+F0=1F_2 = F_1 + F_0 = 1, so F0F2−F12=0−1=−1=(−1)1F_0 F_2 - F_1^2 = 0 - 1 = -1 = (-1)^1. Thus P(1)P(1) holds.
  3. Induction step. Let n≥1n \ge 1 and assume P(n)P(n).
  4. By the recurrence, Fn+2=Fn+1+FnF_{n+2} = F_{n+1} + F_n. So FnFn+2−Fn+12=FnFn+1+Fn2−Fn+12F_n F_{n+2} - F_{n+1}^2 = F_n F_{n+1} + F_n^2 - F_{n+1}^2.
  5. Rearranging, this equals Fn2−Fn+1(Fn+1−Fn)F_n^2 - F_{n+1}(F_{n+1} - F_n).
  6. Since n≥1n \ge 1, the recurrence gives Fn+1=Fn+Fn−1F_{n+1} = F_n + F_{n-1}, so Fn+1−Fn=Fn−1F_{n+1} - F_n = F_{n-1}.
  7. Hence FnFn+2−Fn+12=Fn2−Fn−1Fn+1=−(Fn−1Fn+1−Fn2)F_n F_{n+2} - F_{n+1}^2 = F_n^2 - F_{n-1} F_{n+1} = -(F_{n-1} F_{n+1} - F_n^2).
  8. By P(n)P(n), this equals −(−1)n=(−1)n+1-(-1)^n = (-1)^{n+1}. This is P(n+1)P(n + 1).
  9. By induction, Fn−1Fn+1−Fn2=(−1)nF_{n-1} F_{n+1} - F_n^2 = (-1)^n for every positive integer nn.

Idea

Replace Fn+2F_{n+2} by Fn+1+FnF_{n+1} + F_n in the next instance of the identity. After one more use of the recurrence, the expression becomes the previous one with the opposite sign. So the sign alternates, starting from −1-1 at n=1n = 1.
