Proof of the associativity of addition by induction
Builds on Addition of natural numbersSuccessor functionMathematical induction
Proof
We argue by induction on . Let be the successor function. The addition satisfies and for all natural numbers and . Fix natural numbers and .
- For : the definition gives .
- Also , so . Thus .
- Suppose that for some natural number .
- By the definition, .
- By the hypothesis of step 3, .
- By the definition, .
- By the definition again, , so .
- Steps 4 to 7 give .
- Since , induction gives for every natural number . As and were arbitrary, the law holds for all , and .
Idea
The recursive definition of addition peels one successor off the last number at a time. On both sides, this successor moves to the outside in the same way. So the case reduces to the case .
