Proof of induction from an arbitrary base case
Builds on Mathematical inductionOrder on the natural numbersAddition of natural numbersAssociativity of addition
Proof
We apply ordinary induction to a shifted property. Let and be as in the statement. For each natural number , let be the property " holds". Here is the addition of natural numbers.
- For each natural number , we have by the definition of the order. So makes sense.
- Base case: , and holds by hypothesis. So holds.
- Induction step: suppose that holds, that is, holds.
- By step 1, . So the second hypothesis of the statement, applied to , gives .
- By the associativity of addition, . So holds.
- By induction, holds for every natural number .
- Now let be a natural number with . By the definition of the order, there is a natural number with .
- By step 6, holds, that is, holds. This holds for every .
Idea
Shift the numbering so that the first domino gets the number . The number becomes the number , and ordinary induction applies to the shifted property.
