Proof of Parseval's identity

Builds on Inner productNorm induced by an inner productOrthonormal basisCoordinates in an orthonormal basisComplex conjugate

Proof

We expand both vectors in the basis and use orthonormality.

  1. Let VV be a finite-dimensional inner product space over 𝕂=ℝ\mathbb{K} = \R or β„‚\C, with inner product βŸ¨β‹…,β‹…βŸ©\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} and induced norm βˆ₯β‹…βˆ₯\norm{\cdot}. Let (e1,…,en)(e_1, \dots, e_n) be an orthonormal basis of VV.
  2. For all u,w∈Vu, w \in V and aβˆˆπ•‚a \in \mathbb{K}, conjugate symmetry and linearity in the first argument give ⟨u,aw⟩=aβ€ΎβŸ¨u,w⟩\ip{u}{a w} = \overline{a} \ip{u}{w}. In the same way, ⟨u,β‹…βŸ©\ip{u}{\cdot} is additive.
  3. Let x,y∈Vx, y \in V, and set ai=⟨x,ei⟩a_i = \ip{x}{e_i} and bj=⟨y,ej⟩b_j = \ip{y}{e_j}. By the formula for coordinates, x=βˆ‘i=1naieix = \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i e_i and y=βˆ‘j=1nbjejy = \sum_{j=1}^{n} b_j e_j.
  4. Linearity in the first argument and step 2 give ⟨x,y⟩=βˆ‘i=1nβˆ‘j=1naibjβ€ΎβŸ¨ei,ej⟩\ip{x}{y} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_i \overline{b_j} \ip{e_i}{e_j}.
  5. Since ⟨ei,ej⟩=Ξ΄ij\ip{e_i}{e_j} = \delta_{ij}, only the terms with i=ji = j remain. So ⟨x,y⟩=βˆ‘i=1naibiβ€Ύ=βˆ‘i=1n⟨x,ei⟩⟨y,eiβŸ©β€Ύ\ip{x}{y} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_i \overline{b_i} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \ip{x}{e_i} \overline{\ip{y}{e_i}}.
  6. This is the first identity. Now take y=xy = x. Then βˆ₯xβˆ₯2=⟨x,x⟩=βˆ‘i=1n⟨x,ei⟩⟨x,eiβŸ©β€Ύ\norm{x}^2 = \ip{x}{x} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \ip{x}{e_i} \overline{\ip{x}{e_i}}.
  7. For each zβˆˆβ„‚z \in \C, the product of zz and its complex conjugate is zzβ€Ύ=∣z∣2z \overline{z} = \abs{z}^2. Hence βˆ₯xβˆ₯2=βˆ‘i=1n∣⟨x,ei⟩∣2\norm{x}^2 = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \abs{\ip{x}{e_i}}^2, which is the second identity.

Idea

In an orthonormal basis, the coordinates of a vector are its inner products with the basis vectors. Expanding ⟨x,y⟩\ip{x}{y} in these coordinates gives a double sum. Orthonormality kills every mixed term, so only the diagonal terms remain.
