Proof of the generalized pigeonhole principle
Builds on Cardinality of a finite setRule of sum
Proof
We argue by contradiction.
- Let and be finite sets, let be a function, and let be a natural number with .
- For , write . Each is a subset of the finite set , so it is finite.
- Suppose, for a contradiction, that for every .
- The sets for are pairwise disjoint. Indeed, if , then .
- Their union is , because each lies in .
- By the rule of sum, applied to the pairwise disjoint finite sets , we get .
- By step 3, each term of this sum is at most , and there are terms. So .
- This contradicts the hypothesis of step 1.
- Hence some has , that is, its fibre has cardinality greater than .
Idea
The fibres of split into disjoint pieces, so their sizes add up to . If every piece had at most elements, the total would be at most , which is too small.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
