Proof

We argue by induction on kk. For k=0k = 0 the empty family is linearly independent, so we treat k≥1k \ge 1.

  1. For k≥1k \ge 1, let P(k)P(k) say: eigenvectors v1,…,vkv_1, \dots, v_k of TT for pairwise distinct eigenvalues λ1,…,λk\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_k are linearly independent.
  2. A fact on vector spaces: if a∈Fa \in F, v∈Vv \in V, v≠0v \ne 0 and av=0a v = 0, then a=0a = 0. Otherwise v=a−1(av)=a−10=0v = a^{-1} (a v) = a^{-1} 0 = 0.
  3. Base case k=1k = 1: an eigenvector v1v_1 is not 00. If a1v1=0a_1 v_1 = 0, then a1=0a_1 = 0 by step 2. So P(1)P(1) holds.
  4. Induction step: let k≥2k \ge 2 and assume P(k−1)P(k-1). Let v1,…,vkv_1, \dots, v_k be as in P(k)P(k), and let a1v1+⋯+akvk=0a_1 v_1 + \cdots + a_k v_k = 0 with ai∈Fa_i \in F.
  5. Apply the linear map TT, and use T(vi)=λiviT(v_i) = \lambda_i v_i. This gives a1λ1v1+⋯+akλkvk=0a_1 \lambda_1 v_1 + \cdots + a_k \lambda_k v_k = 0.
  6. Multiply the relation of step 4 by λk\lambda_k, and subtract it from step 5. The terms with vkv_k cancel.
  7. This gives ∑i=1k−1ai(λi−λk)vi=0\sum_{i=1}^{k-1} a_i (\lambda_i - \lambda_k) v_i = 0.
  8. The vectors v1,…,vk−1v_1, \dots, v_{k-1} are eigenvectors for the distinct eigenvalues λ1,…,λk−1\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_{k-1}. By P(k−1)P(k-1), ai(λi−λk)=0a_i (\lambda_i - \lambda_k) = 0 for i<ki < k.
  9. For i<ki < k, λi≠λk\lambda_i \ne \lambda_k, so λi−λk\lambda_i - \lambda_k is invertible in the field FF. Hence ai=0a_i = 0 for i<ki < k.
  10. Then step 4 becomes akvk=0a_k v_k = 0. Since vk≠0v_k \ne 0, step 2 gives ak=0a_k = 0.
  11. So all aia_i are 00, and v1,…,vkv_1, \dots, v_k are linearly independent. This proves P(k)P(k), and by induction P(k)P(k) holds for all k≥1k \ge 1.

Idea

Apply T−λkid⁡VT - \lambda_k \id_V to a linear relation. It multiplies each viv_i by λi−λk\lambda_i - \lambda_k, so it removes vkv_k and keeps the other terms with nonzero factors. The induction hypothesis then kills the other coefficients, and the last one follows.
