Proof that the number of odd-degree vertices is even
Builds on Degree of a vertexHandshaking lemma
Proof
- Let be the vertex set and the edge set of . Let be the set of vertices of odd degree, and the set of vertices of even degree.
- By the handshaking lemma, , which is even.
- The sum is a sum of even numbers, so it is even.
- Hence is even.
- Each term of the sum in step 4 is odd, so it is congruent to modulo . Thus that sum is congruent to modulo .
- By steps 4 and 5, is even.
Idea
The total of all degrees is even. The even degrees do not change the parity, so the odd degrees must also add up to an even number, and that needs an even count of them.
