Proof that the projections of a product are continuous

Proof
We compute preimages of open sets.
- Let be open in . The preimage is .
- The set is open in by the axioms of a topology. So is one of the sets of the product topology basis.
- By the definition of a basis, its members are open. So is open in , and is continuous.
- Let be open in . In the same way, , and is open in .
- So is a basic open set, and is continuous.
Idea
The preimage of an open set under a projection is a box whose other side is the whole factor. Such a box is one of the basic open sets of the product topology.
