Definition
A field is real closed if is formally real and no algebraic extension of is formally real. Let be an ordered field. A real closure of is an algebraic extension of such that:
- is real closed;
- the ordering of , in which the nonnegative elements are the squares, restricts to on .
Remarks
A real closed field has exactly one ordering, given by if and only if is a square, so clause 2 makes sense. Equivalently, is real closed if and only if two things hold. It has an ordering in which every positive element is a square, and every polynomial of odd degree over has a root in . Every ordered field has a real closure, and it is unique up to a unique isomorphism over that respects the orderings. Example: the field of real algebraic numbers is a real closure of . Non-example: is real closed, but it is not a real closure of , because it is not algebraic over .
