Definition
Let be Minkowski space with inertial coordinates , where is the speed of light. Let a particle be at the event with four-momentum . The relativistic angular momentum of the particle about the origin is the antisymmetric tensor with components For a system of particles, the total angular momentum is the sum of these tensors, all taken at the same time .
Remarks
The space components with are the components of the classical angular momentum ; for example . The mixed components are . For a free particle, , and the term drops out of , so is constant along the motion. Example: a particle with moving on the line , has at every time. Non-example: the vector alone is not a four-dimensional tensor; under a boost it mixes with the components . Under a translation of the origin by , changes to .
