Associative rings and algebras Definition
Semiperfect ring
Definition
Let be a ring with identity and its Jacobson radical. is semiperfect if the following hold.
- is semilocal, that is, is a semisimple ring.
- Idempotents lift modulo : for every with there is with and .
Remarks
Example: a local ring is semiperfect: is a field, hence semisimple, and its only idempotents and lift to and . Non-example: let . Its maximal ideals are generated by and , so and clause 1 holds. Clause 2 fails: is a domain, so its only idempotents are and , which cannot lift the idempotent of . Equivalent forms: every finitely generated left -module has a projective cover; or for orthogonal idempotents with each local. The definition is left-right symmetric.
