Definition

Let (xn)n≥1(x_n)_{n \ge 1} be a sequence of real or complex numbers and let LL be a number. The sequence converges statistically to LL if for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 the set {n≥1:∣xn−L∣≥ε}\set{n \ge 1 : \abs{x_n - L} \ge \varepsilon} has natural density 00.

Remarks

Every convergent sequence with limit LL converges statistically to LL, since each of the sets above is finite and finite sets have density 00. The statistical limit is unique when it exists.

Example: let xn=1x_n = 1 if nn is a perfect square and xn=0x_n = 0 otherwise. For 0<ε≤10 < \varepsilon \le 1, the set of nn with ∣xn∣≥ε\abs{x_n} \ge \varepsilon is the set of squares, which has at most N\sqrt{N} elements up to NN, so its density is 00. Hence (xn)(x_n) converges statistically to 00, although it does not converge.

Non-example: x=(1,0,1,0,… )x = (1, 0, 1, 0, \dots) does not converge statistically. For any LL, one of ∣1−L∣\abs{1 - L} and ∣L∣\abs{L} is at least 1/21/2. So for ε=1/2\varepsilon = 1/2 the set above contains all odd or all even nn, and its density is not 00.

A sequence converges statistically to LL if and only if there is a set KK of density 11 such that xn→Lx_n \to L as n→∞n \to \infty through KK. A bounded sequence converges statistically to LL if and only if 1n∑k=1n∣xk−L∣→0\frac{1}{n} \sum_{k=1}^{n} \abs{x_k - L} \to 0, which is the condition of strong Cesàro summability with exponent 11 applied to the sequence (xn)(x_n).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
