Example
The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model is a tight-binding chain with two sites and in each unit cell and alternating hopping amplitudes. Let be the hopping inside a cell and between neighbouring cells. On , with , the Hamiltonian is Its Bloch Hamiltonian is so the band structure is .
Check of the gap: ranges over , so the bands are separated by a gap around exactly when .
Check of the topology: anticommutes with (chiral symmetry), so when the loop avoids and has a winding number around . The circle has centre and radius , so the winding number has absolute value if and is if .
Check of the edge states: take the half-infinite chain with and . The site of the first cell has no partner, since its only bond would go to cell . So satisfies , a zero-energy state at the end, as predicted by the nonzero winding number.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
