Tight-binding model
Builds on Brillouin zoneSelf-adjoint operatorAlmost Mathieu operator
Example
The simplest tight-binding model describes an electron hopping between the sites of the chain . Let and , and define the operator on by It is a bounded self-adjoint operator. The Fourier series map from onto turns into multiplication by Check: the shift becomes multiplication by , and the shift becomes multiplication by , whose sum is . So the band structure is the single band over the Brillouin zone , and the spectrum of is the interval .
On the square lattice with hopping to the four neighbours, the same computation gives on . Adding a quasi-periodic potential to the chain gives the almost Mathieu operator.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
