Definition
Let be a field extension. The extension is transcendental if it is not algebraic, that is, if some element of is transcendental over .
Remarks
Example: is transcendental, because is a transcendental number. Example: for a field , the extension of rational functions is transcendental, since for every nonzero . Non-example: is not transcendental, because it is finite and hence algebraic. Every field extension is the composite of a purely transcendental step and an algebraic step , where is a transcendence basis.
