Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proposition
Vectors span R^m iff the matrix of columns has a pivot in every row
Builds on Linear spanPivotCoordinate space
Statement
Let be vectors in the coordinate space . Let be the matrix whose columns are .
Then the linear span of is all of if and only if every row of contains a pivot position.
Remarks
In particular, if , then the vectors cannot span , since has at most pivot positions. A row without a pivot gives a vector for which the system has no solution.
