Weyl character formula for compact groups

Builds on Compact Lie groupMaximal torusWeyl group of a compact Lie groupCharacter of a representationIrreducible representation

Statement

Let GG be a connected compact Lie group, and let TT be a maximal torus with Lie algebra 𝔱\mathfrak{t}. Let WW be the Weyl group, acting on the dual space 𝔱∗\mathfrak{t}^*. Identify each continuous character of TT with the linear form μ∈𝔱∗\mu \in \mathfrak{t}^* such that the character sends exp⁡H\exp H to eiμ(H)e^{i\mu(H)} for H∈𝔱H \in \mathfrak{t}. Let Φ⊂𝔱∗\Phi \subset \mathfrak{t}^* be the roots of GG, choose a set Φ+\Phi^+ of positive roots, and let ρ=12∑α∈Φ+α\rho = \frac{1}{2}\sum_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \alpha. For w∈Ww \in W let ε(w)=det⁡(w)∈{1,−1}\varepsilon(w) = \det(w) \in \set{1, -1}. Let VV be a finite-dimensional irreducible continuous representation of GG with highest weight λ\lambda, and let χV\chi_V be its character. Then for every H∈𝔱H \in \mathfrak{t} with ∏α∈Φ+sin⁡(α(H)/2)≠0\prod_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \sin(\alpha(H)/2) \ne 0, χV(exp⁡H)=∑w∈Wε(w) ei(w(λ+ρ))(H)∑w∈Wε(w) ei(wρ)(H).\chi_V(\exp H) = \frac{\sum_{w \in W} \varepsilon(w)\, e^{i (w(\lambda + \rho))(H)}}{\sum_{w \in W} \varepsilon(w)\, e^{i (w\rho)(H)}}.

Remarks

The denominator equals ∏α∈Φ+(eiα(H)/2−e−iα(H)/2)\prod_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \left(e^{i\alpha(H)/2} - e^{-i\alpha(H)/2}\right), by the Weyl denominator formula. One proof multiplies χV\chi_V by the denominator and notes that the product is WW-alternating with integer coefficients. The Weyl integration formula and ∫G∣χV∣2 dg=1\int_G \abs{\chi_V}^2 \, dg = 1 then show that only the term λ+ρ\lambda + \rho and its WW-images survive, each with coefficient ±1\pm 1. Example: for G=SU(2)G = SU(2) and H=diag⁡(iθ,−iθ)H = \operatorname{diag}(i\theta, -i\theta), there is one positive root with α(H)=2θ\alpha(H) = 2\theta, ρ(H)=θ\rho(H) = \theta, and the representation of dimension n+1n + 1 has λ(H)=nθ\lambda(H) = n\theta. The formula gives χ(exp⁡H)=ei(n+1)θ−e−i(n+1)θeiθ−e−iθ=sin⁡((n+1)θ)sin⁡θ\chi(\exp H) = \frac{e^{i(n+1)\theta} - e^{-i(n+1)\theta}}{e^{i\theta} - e^{-i\theta}} = \frac{\sin((n+1)\theta)}{\sin\theta}, which is einθ+ei(n−2)θ+⋯+e−inθe^{in\theta} + e^{i(n-2)\theta} + \cdots + e^{-in\theta}. Letting H→0H \to 0 gives the Weyl dimension formula dim⁡V=∏α∈Φ+⟨λ+ρ,α⟩⟨ρ,α⟩\dim V = \prod_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \frac{\ip{\lambda + \rho}{\alpha}}{\ip{\rho}{\alpha}} for a WW-invariant inner product on 𝔱∗\mathfrak{t}^*.

For a student

By conjugacy of maximal tori, a character is determined by its values on TT, so the formula gives it everywhere. Together with the Peter–Weyl theorem it gives the theorem of the highest weight: irreducible representations of GG correspond to dominant integral weights. The dimension formula and Kostant's multiplicity formula follow from it, and the Borel–Weil–Bott theorem gives a geometric realisation of the same representations. For G=U(n)G = U(n) the formula expresses irreducible characters as Schur polynomials in the eigenvalues.
