Builds on Compact Lie groupMaximal torusWeyl group of a compact Lie groupHaar measureAdjoint representation of a Lie group

Statement

Let GG be a connected compact Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}. Let TT be a maximal torus with Lie algebra 𝔱\mathfrak{t}, and let WW be the Weyl group. Give GG, TT and G/TG/T their invariant probability measures dgdg, dtdt and dg˙d\dot g (normalised Haar measures). For t∈Tt \in T let δ(t)=det⁡(id⁡−Ad⁡(t−1)∣𝔤/𝔱),\delta(t) = \det\left(\id - \operatorname{Ad}(t^{-1})\big|_{\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{t}}\right), where Ad⁡\operatorname{Ad} is the adjoint representation. Then for every continuous function f ⁣:G→ℂf \colon G \to \C, ∫Gf(g) dg=1∣W∣∫Tδ(t)∫G/Tf(gtg−1) dg˙ dt.\int_G f(g) \, dg = \frac{1}{\abs{W}} \int_T \delta(t) \int_{G/T} f(g t g^{-1}) \, d\dot g \, dt. In particular, if ff is a class function, then ∫Gf(g) dg=1∣W∣∫Tf(t) δ(t) dt\int_G f(g) \, dg = \frac{1}{\abs{W}} \int_T f(t)\,\delta(t) \, dt.

Remarks

The map G/T×T→GG/T \times T \to G, (gT,t)↦gtg−1(gT, t) \mapsto gtg^{-1}, is surjective by the conjugacy of maximal tori, and over the dense set of regular elements it is a covering of degree ∣W∣\abs{W}. Its Jacobian at (gT,t)(gT, t) is δ(t)\delta(t), which gives the formula by change of variables. In terms of roots, δ(t)=∏α(1−t−α)\delta(t) = \prod_{\alpha} (1 - t^{-\alpha}), the product over all roots α\alpha, which equals ∣∏α>0(tα/2−t−α/2)∣2\abs{\prod_{\alpha > 0} (t^{\alpha/2} - t^{-\alpha/2})}^2 when this makes sense, so δ≥0\delta \ge 0. Example: for G=SU(2)G = SU(2) and t=diag⁡(eiθ,e−iθ)t = \operatorname{diag}(e^{i\theta}, e^{-i\theta}), δ(t)=∣eiθ−e−iθ∣2=4sin⁡2θ\delta(t) = \abs{e^{i\theta} - e^{-i\theta}}^2 = 4\sin^2\theta and ∣W∣=2\abs{W} = 2. So for a class function ∫SU(2)f dg=1π∫02πf(tθ)sin⁡2θ dθ\int_{SU(2)} f \, dg = \frac{1}{\pi}\int_0^{2\pi} f(t_\theta) \sin^2\theta \, d\theta; for f=1f = 1 this gives 1π⋅π=1\frac{1}{\pi} \cdot \pi = 1.

Going deeper

For a student

The formula is the main tool for computing integrals of characters. With the Schur orthogonality relations it shows that an irreducible character times the Weyl denominator is an alternating sum of characters of TT. This is the core of the proof of the Weyl character formula. In random matrix theory, the case G=U(n)G = U(n) gives the joint density of eigenvalues of a Haar-random unitary matrix, proportional to ∏j<k∣zj−zk∣2\prod_{j < k} \abs{z_j - z_k}^2.
