Absolute Galois group
Definition
Let be a field and let be a separable closure of . The absolute Galois group of is the Galois group of field automorphisms of that fix pointwise, with the Krull topology.
Remarks
It does not depend on the choice of up to isomorphism, because two separable closures are isomorphic over . The induced isomorphism of Galois groups is unique only up to an inner automorphism. If is perfect, for example of characteristic , then is an algebraic closure of . Example: has order , generated by complex conjugation, since is algebraically closed and . Example: for a finite field , the group is isomorphic to the profinite completion of , topologically generated by . Non-example: is not the absolute Galois group of , since is not separably closed; has no root in it. If is separably closed, then is trivial.
