Definition

Let YY be a topological space and A⊆YA \subseteq Y. A retraction of YY onto AA is a continuous map r ⁣:Y→Ar \colon Y \to A with r(a)=ar(a) = a for all a∈Aa \in A.

Let XX be a metrizable space. XX is an absolute neighborhood retract (ANR) if the following holds for every metrizable space YY. Let hh be any homeomorphism of XX onto a closed subset h(X)h(X) of YY. Then there is an open set U⊆YU \subseteq Y with h(X)⊆Uh(X) \subseteq U and a retraction of UU onto h(X)h(X). XX is an absolute retract (AR) if one can always take U=YU = Y.

Remarks

Some authors define these classes for compact metrizable spaces only, or for other classes of spaces; the definition above is for metrizable spaces. Equivalently, XX is an ANR if every continuous map f ⁣:A→Xf \colon A \to X from a closed subset AA of a metrizable space YY extends to a continuous map on some open set U⊇AU \supseteq A.

Example: X=[0,1]X = [0, 1] is an AR. Given hh as above, the map h−1 ⁣:h(X)→[0,1]h^{-1} \colon h(X) \to [0, 1] is continuous on the closed set h(X)h(X), and by the Tietze extension theorem it extends to a continuous g ⁣:Y→[0,1]g \colon Y \to [0, 1]. Then r=h∘gr = h \circ g is a retraction of YY onto h(X)h(X).

Non-example: X={0}∪{1/n:n≥1}X = \set{0} \cup \set{1/n : n \ge 1}, a closed subset of Y=ℝY = \R, with hh the inclusion. Any open U⊇XU \supseteq X contains an interval (−ε,ε)(-\varepsilon, \varepsilon). A retraction r ⁣:U→Xr \colon U \to X would map this connected interval onto a connected subset of XX that contains 00 and 1/n1/n for large nn, which is impossible.
