Acoustic wave equation

Definition
Consider an inviscid compressible fluid in a uniform state of rest with density and pressure . Let be its speed of sound, given by , the derivative at constant entropy at the state . Write the pressure as for and time , where is the acoustic pressure. The acoustic wave equation is where is the Laplacian in .
Remarks
It is obtained from the mass and momentum equations of an inviscid fluid and an isentropic equation of state. One keeps only the terms that are linear in the perturbations , and the velocity . The density perturbation and the velocity potential , with and , satisfy the same equation.
Example: the plane wave with is a solution exactly when . Indeed and .
Non-example: is not a solution, since while .
In one space dimension every solution has the form , two waves that move in opposite directions at speed .
